Xiaomi Mi Band 5 launched: Larger display, contactless payments and long battery life
Xiaomi has launched the Mi Band 5. The new fitness tracker not only features a larger display than its predecessor, but also supports other new features like magnetic charging and contactless payments. The Mi Band 5 starts at CNY 189 (~US$26.77) and comes with a choice of eight bands.
Xiaomi has unveiled the Mi Band 5, its latest budget fitness tracker. The Mi Band 5 starts at CNY 189 (~US$26.77) for the non-NFC model and CNY 229 (~US$32.43) for the version with NFC. Please note that these estimated US$ prices include taxes, so they do not necessarily represent how much Xiaomi will charge for the global versions.
The Mi Band 5 boasts a 1.1-inch AMOLED panel, which operates at 126 x 294 pixels. Xiaomi claims that the Mi Band 5 has a 20% larger display than its predecessor, which seems incorrect. The Mi Band 4 has a 0.95-inch display, which is only 15% smaller than the one its successor has. Additionally, the Mi Band 5 has a 125 mAh battery. Xiaomi promises that this should allow the fitness tracker to last up to two weeks on a single charge. Xiaomi has also included 512 MB of RAM and 16 MB of internal storage. The Mi Band 5 supports Bluetooth 5.0 and is compatible with iOS or Android.
One major change from the Mi Band 4 is the inclusion of magnetic charging. The Mi Band 5 supports contactless payments too, a feature that is expected to appear on the global version of the fitness tracker. Xiaomi is yet to disclose when it will release the Mi Band 5 outside of China, but the global version should also feature an integrated SpO2 sensor for monitoring blood oxygen levels.
